Its consumer storage includes 10 GB at no cost, photo backup, online-only files, and access across devices. Hivenet also states that it does not use your files or photos to train AI models.
That model is worth considering if you want a different architecture from a conventional hyperscale cloud and need a clear route to several terabytes. The trade-off is a younger productivity ecosystem: Hivenet is primarily a storage product, while Google and Microsoft bundle mature document editing, email, meetings, and organisation-wide administration. Every Google Account includes 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google One plans begin at 100 GB, and eligible plans can be shared with up to five other people. The familiar editors, comments, permissions, and browser-based workflows make Drive particularly effective when the people you work with already use Google Workspace.
The shared allowance can disappear faster than expected when photos and email use the same pool. Standard Drive is also different from an end-to-end encrypted vault: Google manages the service-side encryption keys. Check the current Google One plan options for your account and location.
OneDrive fits naturally into Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint. Microsoft currently offers 5 GB with a free account, a 100 GB Microsoft 365 Basic route, and 1 TB with Microsoft 365 Personal. Family plans allocate 1 TB to each of up to six people rather than putting everyone into one shared terabyte.
For many UK households and small organisations, the deciding factor is whether they already pay for Microsoft 365. If they do, the included storage can be simpler than adding another subscription. Proton Drive applies end-to-end and zero-access encryption to file contents, filenames, and related metadata. Proton says that it cannot access this protected information. That makes the service a strong candidate for personal records and other files where limiting provider access matters more than having the broadest set of third-party integrations.
Proton offers free storage and paid routes including Drive Plus at 200 GB and Proton Unlimited at 500 GB. Capacity and bundle details can change, so consult Proton Drive's current plans. End-to-end encryption protects confidentiality, but it does not remove the need for a recovery plan, strong authentication, or a second copy of irreplaceable files.
Dropbox remains easy to understand across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and the web. Its individual Plus plan provides 2 TB, and eligible plans add features such as deleted-file recovery, version history, remote wipe, and Dropbox Rewind. That combination works well for freelancers and small groups that exchange large folders with people using different devices.
Dropbox's free allowance is small, and its standard service does not give users end-to-end encryption keys. Assess the sharing and recovery features you actually need, then check Dropbox's current individual plan or its separate business plans.
pCloud offers subscription and one-time payment options across 500 GB, 2 TB, and 10 TB capacities. Its virtual drive can reduce local disk use, while built-in audio and video playback suits a personal media library. It is worth comparing when confidential team files matter more than an integrated office suite.

Encryption in transit and at rest should be a baseline, but the key question is who can decrypt the files. With end-to-end or client-side encryption, the customer normally controls the secret needed to read protected content. That reduces provider access, but it can also limit search, previews, integrations, and provider-assisted recovery.
For a personal account, enable multi-factor authentication, save recovery codes safely, and test how to export important files. For sensitive information, read the provider's security documentation instead of relying on a padlock icon or a broad claim that data is encrypted.
A server in the UK or EU does not by itself make a cloud service UK GDPR compliant. The Information Commissioner's Office explains that organisations must choose processors offering sufficient security guarantees and put the required terms in a written contract. Its current cloud-transfer guidance also focuses on the entity you contract with and the recipient of a transfer, rather than treating server location as the only test.
For business use, review the data processing agreement, subprocessors, international-transfer mechanism, access controls, retention and deletion terms, incident process, and available audit or certification evidence. The security measures must be appropriate to the data and risk. The ICO recommends encryption for personal information in storage or transit, while stressing that encryption is one control within a wider security assessment. Cloud sync keeps the same working files available across devices. It can also copy a mistaken deletion or corrupted file everywhere. Version history and deleted-file recovery help, but their time limits and plan rules vary.
A backup is a separate recoverable copy designed for restoration after loss or damage. If a service markets disk images, system restoration, or continuous computer backup, compare it as a backup product rather than assuming it is interchangeable with a collaborative storage drive. Compare the total storage you need today with photo growth, shared users, and device backups over the next two or three years. Check whether capacity is per person or pooled, whether VAT is included, which currency is billed, and what happens when a promotion ends. For lifetime plans, consider the upfront cost, refund terms, and the risk that your requirements change.
Before committing, upload a representative folder, share it with another person, restore an older version, and download an export. A low monthly price is poor value if the service makes everyday access or eventual migration difficult.
Shortlist two services, test them with real files, and confirm the current plan terms before paying. For business data, make the contractual and security review part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.
