What is Earth Day?

EARTHDAY.ORG's founders initiated the inaugural Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Since then, the organization mobilizes over 1 billion individuals each year on Earth Day and beyond to support environmental protection and safeguard the planet.

Why is a community-driven cloud so important?

Consider these facts:

Water

Data centers can use up to 150 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of water per day.

A hyperscale data center can use 2.1 million liters of water per day on average, totaling 760 million liters annually. Even smaller wholesale and retail data centers use 23-121 million liters per year. A single data center can use 7 million liters of water per day as much as a town of 10,000-50,000 people.

E-waste

E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream, with less than 20% being recycled on average each year.

The world generated 53.6 million tones (Mt) of e-waste in 2019, which is close to the 50 Mt figure stated. However, only 17.4% was documented as formally collected and recycled. E-waste is projected to grow to 74.7 Mt by 2030. The U.S. generated 6.9 million tons of e-waste in 2019 but only recycled 15% of it.

Energy

Data centers consume more energy than some countries, and their consumption is projected to reach 1/5 of the global electricity supply by 2025.

Data centers accounted for about 1-1.5% of global electricity use in 2022. By 2025, data center electricity consumption is predicted to account for up to 3.2% of total global emissions according to one estimate. Many sources claims data centers could consume 20% of the world's energy supply by 2025, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates data centers could consume over 1,000 TWh by 2026, more than doubling from 460 TWh in 2022.

AIs and GPUs

Training a single AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their lifetimes.

Studies have found that training a single large AI model can emit over 626,000 pounds of CO2, equivalent to the lifetime emissions of five cars. Factors like the energy mix powering the computers affect the exact emissions. But it's clear AI training, especially large language models using GPU accelerators, has a substantial carbon footprint that can be on par with the multi-year emissions of several passenger vehicles.

Data centers

The cloud storage industry's carbon footprint is on par with the airline industry.

A hyperscale data center can use 2.1 million liters of water per day on average, totaling 760 million liters annually. Even smaller wholesale and retail data centers use 23-121 million liters per year. A single data center can use 7 million liters of water per day as much as a town of 10,000-50,000 people.
